Acid Reflux: The Warning signs and Symptoms

Reflux Esophagitis or acid reflux is a stumbling block to a healthy condition that results from laceration of the esophagus by the excessive secretion of gastric acids in the stomach. On an average, one in ten American citizens suffers from gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) daily. Reflux disease can create a burning feeling in the throat, esophagus and the stomach along with suffocation.

GERD is generally interrelated with Asthma. Medical treatment for reflux complaints fails to cure asthma. The well-known acid reflux symptoms are indigestion and the movement of the digestive enzymes into the esophagus, mouth, lungs and throat. This creates a burning and painful condition in the chest. The patient suffers from dental erosion, dysphagia (inability to ingest food), chest pain, heartburn, gruffness and regurgitation, in which indigested food in the stomach returns to the mouth.

Severe uneasiness and chest pain are the most common symptoms of acid reflux, which attacks generally during sleeping hours when the individual who suffers, wakes up abruptly. Belching, gaseous stomach, throat pain or exertion while swallowing, burning sense, nausea, vomiting and severe stomach pain are supplementary symptoms of acid reflux.

The foremost warning sign of GERD is heartburn, an inflammatory pain in the esophagus and chest. The pain spreads to the throat and might also result from hiatal hernia in which the stomach projects within the chest. Therefore undigested foods that are acidic in nature get into the breathing system, aggravating pain in the chest.

When you eat a limited quantity of healthy nutritious food, fresh vegetables and fruits, the risk of contracting GERD diminishes. You must never rest or exercise immediately after eating food; there should be at least two hours gap between food and bedtime. Acid reflux symptoms aggravate due to the consumption of certain beverages like alcohol, caffeine, tea, fatty liquids like milk, etc.

Acid reflux symptoms moderate and even cease to exist when an obese individual loses substantial weight. Other factors that relieve acid reflux victims are:

  • Discontinuing cigarette smoking habit

  • While you are resting in your bed, keep your head raised by around 6inches height to prevent food in the stomach from reaching the esophagus.

  • Never wear tight clothes that hurt the waist

  • Avoid traumatic situations

  • Do regular exercises such as yoga, meditation, aerobics, etc. and

  • Take medications only after consulting your physician

When you consult a doctor for heartburn or GERD, you must provide details about

  • Duration and severity of GERD symptoms

  • How many times you were affected?

  • Your customary food and drinks

  • Any changes in lifestyle or food habits

  • Your type of clothing- if you wear tight garments?

  • Physical pain and discomfort

  • Previous medical reports, if any

  • Medical prescriptions and

  • Family medical history

Doctors diagnose GERD symptoms through testing upper GI, undigested food movement into esophagus and endoscopy on the upper side of stomach. The treatment often requires strong medicines to stop acid discharge from the stomach and any bleeding. However, the side effects of these drugs are serious and is more reasons to seek natural treatment for acid reflux which is proven to be effective.
