An Innovative Approach to Cancer Therapy with Proteolytic Enzymes

Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, MD, has developed an alternative cancer treatment program that is gaining serious mainstream recognition.

Nicholas Gonzalez, MD is a New York City immunologist who has proposed a cancer treatment approach that incorporates pancreatic enzymes, nutrition, detoxification and autonomic nervous system balance. His work is now being assessed in a large National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health-funded clinical trial conducted through Columbia University. His interest in alternative approaches developed when he was introduced to the cancer treatments used by William Donald Kelley, DDS, a practitioner in the cancer underground from the 1960s to 1980s, who had successfully treated himself for pancreatic cancer with the use of enzymes and nutrition.

Gonzalez attributes much of his current work with enzyme therapy to the theories of John Beard, a Scottish biologist and teacher at the University of Edinburgh. Beard proposed that the digestive function and pancreatic enzymes represent the body’s main defense against cancer and found that placenta cells look and behave like cancer cells but could be stopped from growing when the fetal pancreas was activated. He theorized that the fetus produced enzymes to control placenta growth, which he believed would be similar to the action of pancreatic enzymes on cancer cells if they were used in the same way.

Embryological research has confirmed that the fetal pancreas begins to manufacture and secrete digestive enzymes early in development. This led John Beard to theorize that all tumors arose from misplaced placenta cells which, deprived of proper control, may rapidly grow out of control should the pancreas fail to release enough proteolytic enzymes. His 1911 monograph The Enzyme Therapy of Cancer was met with ridicule by peers but is now recognized as being ahead of its time. Today enzyme therapy is largely forgotten, but Dr. Gonzalez has found that orally ingested pancreatic enzymes are acid stable and able to pass into the small intestine and be absorbed through the intestinal mucosa, showing a profound anti-neoplastic effect. He has made them a key component of his program.

Autonomic balance and metabolic types

The Gonzalez treatment program involves balancing the autonomic nervous system, which is divided into two branches with opposing actions: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic.

People who are predominantly sympathetic tend to be the aggressive, ambitious Type A personalities and those that are predominantly parasympathetic tend to be more reflective and creative types. Autonomic nervous system imbalance is a major reason for disease according to Francis Pottenger in the 1920s and 1930s, and as such, the Gonzalez program places a major emphasis on maintaining balance through diet, supplements, and proteolytic enzyme therapy. Each aspect of the program is crucial to the overall therapeutic success of the patient.

Detoxification

Coffee enemas are an important component of the Gonzalez program as they help to stimulate gallbladder emptying and enhance liver function, which is vital in processing the large amounts of toxic debris produced as tumors break down. Detoxification is essential for the body to work optimally and efficiently process the various therapies being used, and certain detoxification symptoms like low grade fever, muscle aches or pains and rashes may be experienced as the body releases waste material from body tissues.

  • Lemon water detox – helps to flush toxins from the body. Mix the juice of one fresh lemon in one cup of warm water and a teaspoon of honey (or agave if preferred). Drink this once or twice a day, on an empty stomach. This helps to stimulate the liver, boost metabolism and flush toxins from the body.

  • Epsom salt baths – helps to relax, stimulate circulation and soothe the skin. Add two cups of Epsom salts to a basin of warm water and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Take a bath every other day. In times of intense toxicity, take an Epsom salt bath daily.

  • Dry brushing – helps to exfoliate dry skin while invigorating circulation and stimulating the lymphatic system. Use a natural vegetable bristle brush and lightly brush the skin in circular motions, starting at the feet and working up towards the heart. This should be done daily.

  • Oil pulling – helps to detoxify the body by removing toxins from the mouth. Swish 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes and then spit it out. This should be done once a day before eating or drinking anything.

Diet Selection

Additionally, Dr. Gonzalez focuses on detoxification as an essential element of healing. He recommends a variety of methods including salt and soda baths, vinegar baths, skin brushing, mustard foot soaks, lemon water detox, Epsom salt baths, dry brushing and oil pulling. All of these techniques help to mobilize and remove toxins from the body. Dr. Gonzalez understands that health is personal and that each individual must be treated differently using specific treatments and diets tailored to their particular situation. By taking into consideration an individual’s entire health profile, Dr. Gonzalez is able to provide the most effective solutions for lasting health and well-being.

Nutritional supplements and proteolytic enzyme therapy Additional supplements include key antioxidants, such as vitamin C and selenium. Vitamin A, generally in the form of palmitate, and other carotenoids are recommended to help repair the immune system and reduce inflammation. Glutathione, an important antioxidant and detoxifier, is also often included in these programs. Other key supplements may be added depending on the individual's unique needs.

For example, individuals with a poor conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A may need additional vitamin A compounds. Those with low levels of zinc may need zinc and those with a poor overall function of the immune system may need additional herbs and immune-building supplements. Dr. Gonzalez’s

protocols are designed to support enzymatic digestion, balance acid-alkaline levels of the body, enhance antioxidant activity and support detoxification. His supplement programs are personalized for every patient—based on his patient’s biochemistry as well as what has been scientifically proven to work. This integrated approach is designed to support the body’s ability to heal itself, promote optimal health and prevent disease.

Clinical research: NCI and NIH funding Dr. Gonzalez has also had success with this protocol in treating a variety of other types of cancer, including breast, prostate and lung cancers. He has also worked with neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease and chronic fatigue syndrome, among others. By following a comprehensive nutritional approach to health, Dr. Gonzalez enables his patients to regain their health and vitality, and to reduce their risk of developing degenerative diseases. His groundbreaking work is providing us with a greater understanding of the power of nutrition to prevent and heal disease.
